Murky salt water streamed through center of the small town, pulling up dust from the ground and swirling it around as flowed down the road and eddied around the corners of buildings, leaving muddy stains where the water lapped up against the walls. People were wading through the knee-deep water desperately attempting to salvage what had been washed from their homes. Chairs, tables, books and a small china doll all floated toward the open sea, their owners staring after them, atching as their possesions were ripped away by nature.
Samuel, stumbled into town, a shocked expression scarred his face. Snapping back to reality, he rushed over to the citizens of his colony and started barking orders. People started moving again, gathering up what they could. After a few hours of work, the water began to recede and their task became less difficult. They just needed to collect what the ocean had deposited in the mud. By mid-afternoon, the town had been cleaned up to the best of the peoples abilitiy. Everyone then crowded into th meeting hall in the center of the village.
"What is that thing?" demanded Jacob Robertson. "That island out there," he gestured in the direction of the bay, though it wasn't visible through the wall, "fell from the sky and destroyed our supply ship. How are we meant to survive here if everything we had is gone!"
"Calm yourself Jacob," soothed Samuel, attempting to mask his own anxiety. "We shall simply have to work for ourselves. If those savages in the wilderness can do it, surely so can civilized people such as ourselves. Now, that object out in the water appears to be made of silver, enough to make us all rich. Perhaps this is God's way of telling us that, if we can fend for ourselves without relying on the crutch of the Homeland, we shall prosper beyond our wildest dreams. You all saw how it fell from the Heavens."
"But, sir," interjected one of the crowd, "it killed all those men and destroyed so much that we had built."
"The Lord giveth," replied Samuel, "and he taketh away. Now, who wishes to go with me and observe up close this great miracle? We shall take the small boat out at dawn and row to the island. Who will come?" Six men stepped forward, while Samuel beamed. "Good, let us prepare with a night of fasting and prayer. You may all return to your homes," he said addressing the crowd. They obeyed without a word, filing out the back door and into cool evening air.
