OOC: I italicized spells. For your convenience.
Seryth and Artemis stood backs to the wall in the arena. Both had tense bodies and set faces. Do or die. Both of them were great fighters, but there were so many people in the arena. In their immediate area, there were mainly fighters, and, as Seryth noticed, two mages. He would take them out first to reduce the risk of counterspells. One of the only rules in the arena was no area spells, which disappointed Seryth, but it made sense. It wouldn't be fair for a mage to cast a Fireball and kill everyone in the first few seconds.
The King stood up and said a quick speech, thanking everyone for coming, but the noise of the restless crowd quickly drowned out his voice. Exasperated, he picked up a hammer and smashed a massive gong, starting the battle.
Seryth's first action was to cast Mage Armor which immediatly saved his life from two arrows that came flying at him out of the blue. He ignored them, and threw a Scorching Ray at the first mage, hitting the man in the arm and turning it the color of burnt toast. The arm was useless now, and the mage could no longer complete the somantic part of the spell. Rhithik flew over to him and started clawing and biting. Seryth had faith in his familiar, and let him take the mage.
Artemis had other problems. The first thing he saw was a massive barbarian, frothing at the mouth, charging at him. The tall half-orc had an axe in hand, and was taking wide swings with it. Artemis lightly side-stepped the first swing, and stabbed at the orc's thigh, drawing a bit of blood. The next swing of the axe was parried, much to the barbarian's surprise, and Artemis threw together a flurry of combinations that the barbarian could not keep up with. First Flameshard got a bicep, but didn't cut all the way through. The half-orc's arm was left hanging by a thread of skin, soaking the dirt ground with blood. His whole arm had turned black from heat. Artemis spun away, thinking his opponent beyond fighting, perhaps unconscious from the pain. But to his surprise, the barbarian came on even more fiercely, swinging his axe with one arm. Artemis ducked the swing, and came in with both swords, swiping low with Flameshard and high with Lifetap. Flameshard knicked the man's leg, cutting off a chunk of skin and leaving the rest smoking. While the half orc was grimacing with pain, Artemis searched for a breach in the man's armor with Lifetap, stabbing frantically. He found one. And Lifetap found a heart.
The battle progressed quickly in this fashion, with both Seryth and Artemis taking minor wounds. Seryth's left leg had a wide gash in it from a warrior who got in close enough to engage in melee combat. In his anger, Seryth had levitated the man's head and threw it over the wall and into the street beyond, spraying the crowd with a shower of blood and brains. Artemis got burned from a mage's lightning bolt, but had quickly dispatched the mage with four daggers in the belly, to deliberatley cause pain, and one in the throat.
Now both of them stood together, breathing heavily, in the center of the arena. It was amazing how far they had moved during the fighting. The only people left in the arena were them, a tall man with a broadsword, a half-elf with a bow, and a gnome with no weapon, most likely a magic user. Now was the time for tactics.
Seryth only had enough energy for one more spell, and now was not the time for it. He started toward the magic user with his katanas flashing, but got caught in an Entangle spell. Giant vines grew out of the ground and twisted around him, squeezing him tightly. He slashed at them, but to no avail. He tried to ignore the vines thrashing him about and tried to concentrate, preparing to use his last spell. Luck was with him again, however, for the half elf had shot two arrows at the gnome. The first one bounced off some kind of magical shield, but the sheild was weakened enough for the second one to make it through. It had only hit the gnome in the foot, but it made him loose his concentration. The vines retreated back into the ground, and Seryth resumed his charge at the gnome. Having nothing left for weapons, the gnome turned to run. Straight into theTarrasque. The Tarrasque is a beast of legend. It is said that none can kill it short of a diety. The gnome melted under the Tarrasque's gaze, going to his knees and cowering with the rest of the dead bodies. Seryth ran up, realizing the trick, and sliced furiously at the gnome, cutting off both his arms, followed by his head.
Artemis came at the man with the broadsword stabbing to and fro with both swords, coming together in a deadly dance. The man and Artemis moved in a circle, swinging and dodging for a few minutes before Artemis scored the first hit. The man had made the mistake of underestimated Artemis's strength, as most opponents do, and had taken a swing with all his might. Artemis parried the blow effictivley. He moved in, leaving the man no room to manuever. He sliced up with Flameshard, slicing the man's sword arm, and stabbed straight forward with Lifetap, right into the man's lower intestine. The man went down in a pile of blood and gore. Artemis stepped on his throat, snapping it.
The half elf stared in wonder as the Tarrasque slowly shrunk back into Rhithik, who took flight straight after Polymorphing back to his true form. The half elf tried to take him down out of the air with a few arrows, but Rhithik's random changes in altitude and direction threw him off. Long enough for Seryth to prepare his last spell, an Ice Bolt. It shot straight at the half elf, who was still trying to hit Rhithik, and struck home, Freezing him in a solid block of ice.
Seryth jumped up in elation for his hit, but fell back in pain as a dagger pierced his shoulder, and a few other's bounced off his adamantine chain shirt. He turned to see Artemis standing about 25 feet from him, smiling and preparing to throw some more. Drained of magic energy, Seryth hefted his katanas and charged Artemis, aware that he had a very slim chance of surviving the fight. Suddenly, neither of them could move.
The King had stood up once more, and this time had magically enhanced his voice to make it louder then the crowd.
I have decided upon watching this fight that the mission would have a higher chance of success if two people did it rather than one. Therefore, you two being the survivers, the mission is for you. Please exit through the gate and meet me in the Grand Hall at the castle. With that, he turned and exited through a Dimension Door.
Both Artemis and Seryth regained the use of their limbs at the same time. Seryth contemplated killing Artemis now anyway, but decided against it, seeing a troup of guards coming to escort them to the Grand Hall. Seryth threw a look of pure hatred at Artemis as they left. Artemis merely shrugged.
