Short story I wrote at 2 AM during the summer.
Fire at Hell’s Gates
Dedicated to Chase Nielson and Annie
The flames leapt at my coat. Fire consumed the Manor, it was burning all over. People ran to the ships, hoping to escape the now burning city.
“God, I curse you!” I yelled. My companion lay sprawled against the floor. His long blond hair beneath him, his blue eyes shut.
“DAMN YOU GOD! I HATE YOU!” I screamed.
No, you love me. The voice was from nowhere. It was perfect, angelic even. It wasn’t in any particular language, yet I understood it perfectly. It was silent, yet I still heard.
“Must…escape,” Suddenly the seemingly lifeless body rose into the air and burst into flame. Fire engulfed him, burned him until death came. Sweet Release….These words floating in my head.
I suddenly caught fire. The pain seemed to ascend pain. I was burning, my pale skin turning red. I felt it, the pain, yet I seemed to reach some level of numbness, but I could still feel it. The heat forced me to close my eyes.
The pain faded, replaced with voices and screams and explosions. I was walking on something black, seemingly jagged. I glanced around. Men and women of all ages and all nationalities flooded this place. I saw a man rise and disappear in a tunnel of light, which faded away. I saw gates, the Gates of Hell, it seemed they opened, but was that an illusion? Voices mingled, I focused on a few.
“Where the hell am I?”
“You know damn well where you are!”
I saw a warrior, bleeding from the elbows with a puzzled look on his face. He was promised he would go to Valhalla, Paradise if he raided his enemies’ territory. And then I saw a man in flowing robes. I was startled, it was Him. I could tell. It was the Fallen Angel Himself.
“Welcome to Hell, my pupils.” A crowd had gathered around the figure.
“DAMN YOU AND GOD!” I was furious, I raised my fist to attack, but he grabbed my arm and tossed me aside.
The Devil spoke once more: “You will be here, tortured by your past sins until you learn to ‘forgive and understand’ God for causing you pointless suffering. You see the ones rising? They are going to the Gates of Heaven.” He laughed.
