Rick ran through the crowd of zombies as fast as he could Swinging his katana left and right to cut the undead into bloody chunks. Rick rolled away from a large zombie missing an arm. He got up to his knees and drove the tip of the blade through the zombie's eye socket and out through the back of its head. With a quick jerk of his wrist, Rick pulled the gleeming, red blade from the corpse and decapitated another.
His closest friends were all around him, mixed in with the crowd of zombies fighting for survival. Rick saw his friend Mike blast a zombie's head off in an explosion of blood and brains with his shotgun. Mike just laughed as he kicked a zombie in the chest and bunted another in the face, breaking its neck.
Rick cut off the two arms of a zombie as it reached for him. The grey limbs fell to the ground, adding more blood to the road. More gunshots were heard and Rick turned around to see the figures of Justin and his girlfriend Kate standing on top of dumpster completely surrounded. Justin fired his rifle point blank into the undead, blowing heads into bloody pieces. Kate stood next to her love swinging her baseball bat like a woman possessed.
"Come on!" yelled a voice from farther down the road. Rick could just barely make out the shape of the camper he and his friends had been driving. Atop the vehicle stood his younger brother Greg.
"Hurry up!" he shouted. It wouldn't matter if Rick and the rest of his friends got back to the RV. It was almost out of gas. They had no chance of making it to the nearest city. Rick and his friends had gotten out of the RV to look for replacement tires and to siphon fuel from some of the other vehicles stuck on the abandoned road.
Rick felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to ram his katana into the face of his attacker. Mike's smudged face greeted him with a crooked smile. He was covered in blood and dirt. Blowing zombies to bits in close range with a shotgun was like taking a bloody shower.
"We need to move, Rick," said Mike.
"What about Justin and Kate?" asked Rick.
"We'll turn the RV around and pick them up."
Before Rick could say anything else a hulking zombie closed in. It roared and tried to grab Mike. Rick spun his katana in a tight circle and lopped off the thick arm at the elbow. Coagulated blood spurted out, showering Rick and Mike. The zombie roared again, but Mike fired a round into its chest. The zombie was knocked back and Rick kicked its knee in, breaking it and causing the zombie to fall to the ground flat on its face. Rick decapitated the zombie and turned to run for the RV with Mike right behind him.
"Start the bloody engines Greg!" yelled Rick. Greg yelled down through the opening on the top of the RV and it rumbled to life. The lights came on and Rick saw how badly they were surrounded. The whole eight-lane highway was flooded with zombies and even the ditches on the side of the road were filled. It was worse than crowds at a good rollercoaster.
Rick and Mike reached the door after bashin down more zombies. Mike covered their backs while Rick beat on the door.
"Open up already!" he shouted. The door opened inwards and Rick saw the shining face of his girlfriend Sarah looking down at him. She smiled, but frowned as she saw how much blood was covering him.
Mike shoved rick forwards up the steps of the doorway. "In you go," he said.
Mike closed the door behind them and replaced the makeshift barricade they had made out of a bench and two barrels. Mike, being the oldest and only one with his license, ran to the front of the RV and sat down in the driver's seat. He put it in drive just as Greg climbed down the ladder leading up to the roof.
"Hey bro," said Greg as he sat down by the window with his rifle. Rick and Sarah joined him on the other side.
"Is any of......that yours?" asked Sarah pointing to Rick's blood-stained clothes.
"No, those bastards didn't lay a hand on me. I'm perfectly fine," he said smiling. Sarah smiled and wiped the blood and grease from his face. Rick smiled back and kissed her on the lips.
"Heads up mates!" yelled Mike. "Greg get that window opened so Justin and Kate can climb in!"
Greg nodded and slid window next to the table open. Mike pulled up to the dumpster, mowing down all the zombies that were near. Justin and Kate climbed in through the window and Greg closed it behind them. Rick glanced at Justin's hunting rifle and saw that its stock was covered in blood.
"Ran out of ammo, eh?" he asked.
"Yep. Those buggers just kept coming. I ran out and had to beat 'em off. Kate here kicked a good amount of ass out there," Justin said with a smile. Kate laughed and blushed. Mike had stopped the RV and was scanning the road ahead for an opening.
"So, uh what now?" he asked. Rick got up and walked to the front. He saw his katana's scabbard lying on the passenger seat with his cleaning rag. Rick wiped the blood from the blade and sheathed it.
"What's that down there?" he asked while pointing to a large building about half a mile away.
"I think that is the town's mall. I'm not quite sure since I've been here until now," replied Mike. "If it is a mall then maybe there are other survivors inside." He looked up a Rick. Being a natural born leader, Rick was the one making the decisions. Class president, instructor at a martial arts school, and squad leader of his paintball team, Rick had a lot of experience.
"I say we give it a try," he said. "Everyone buckle up." Mike switched his foot from the brake to the gas pedal and the RV sped onward, running down any zombies that got in the way. As they traveled farther down the road, Rick saw that it was a mall.
"Looks like it's a mall," said Rick. "Mike get as close to the entrance as you can."
"Aye captain," said Mike with a laugh. He was always a smartass, but at least he knew how to lighten up everyone's moods with his humor.
Mike turned the RV so that the side door was pointed right at the entrance to the mall less than ten feet away. Greg looked out through the window and saw that the lights in the inside of mall were on. He raised his rifle up and looked through the scope into the interior.
What he saw amazed him. Beyond the doors were two people, but they weren't zombies. One carried an ax and the other had a handgun.
"Hey guys. Some people are running to the entrance," he said with joy. "I think they're gonna open the doors."
"Alright everyone. Grab the gear and lets go," said Rick. They group gathered their supplies of food and ammo. Rick tied his katana's scabbard to a belt loop on his jeans and, with the help of Mike, moved the barricade. The teens all filed out, looking around them for any zombies.
The doors to the mall opened up and the man with the handgun stepped out. "Come on you kids," he said in a gruff country accent. "Get in here."
Rick and his friends ran into the mall and the man locked the door behind them. The other man walked up to them and tipped his hat.
"Name's Jack," he said. "That's Tom"
Tom nodded to the teens. They looked around them. The mall was filled with tons of various stores. Mike saw a Gamestop with the new Playstation 3 on the shelf and smiled.
"What were you kids doing out there?" asked Jack.
"We were trying to find a safe place," said Rick. "We're all that made it out of our town. No one else survived. That was 2 days ago. We've been driving since until we decided to try to get some gas out of cars on the highway over there."
"Tough break lad," said Tom. "Well you and your friends will be safe here. We and the other survivors have every entrance blocked up. Plenty of food and supplies here. Luckily the power is still running."
"How many people are here?" asked Rick.
"About fifteen or so," replied Jack. "Including me and Tom here."
Suddenly there was a loud noise followed by screams. A woman came running around a corner farther down the mall screaming. She too was covered in blood and looked to have a few scratches.
"Jack! Tom!" she shouted. Some roars and gunshots were heard. "Timmy blew up one of the propane tanks and blasted a hole in the barricade. The zombies are pouring through. We need help."
Another person ran around the corner. This time followed by a zombie. He tripped and fell. The man got on his back and fired a shotgun into the trailing zombie's leg, blowing it off in a burst of gore. The zombie fell on the man and clawed its way up his legs, biting and tearing. The man screamed as the zombie took a chunk out of his leg. He screamed again as he pressed the barrel of his shotgun onto the zombie's forehead. The man pulled the trigger and the zombie's head was blown off. Blood and brains rained down as the man pulled himself to his feet only to be struck down by a bullet to the back of his head.
Rick looked at Tom aiming his handgun at the fresh corpse. Rick drew his katana and pointed the tip at the man's throat. Jack moved towards him, but Mike brought his shotgun up and cocked it.
"What the hell man? Why'd you kill that guy?" shouted Rick.
"Didn't you see boy? That man was bitten. Within minutes he would've been trying to devour us. Haven't you seen the movies?" said Tom.
Rick realized what had happened. He reasoned that he was upset about what Tom had done because that was what he had done to one of his friends a day ago when they had tried to raid a Wal-Mart.
Another explosion was heard and more screams. Gunshots filled the air as the survivors made a last stand against the undead. Jack hefted his ax and ran down the wide floor of the mall to help his fellow people. Rick looked at his friends.
"Come on guys," he began. "We have to help these people."
"That's the spirit," said Tom.
They ran down and around the corner. Zombies were crawling over the rubble near the hole in the wall. Some fires were spreading and some of the zombies were stumbling aflame, looking for flesh to eat.
Rick held his katana before him and charged towards the undead, yelling wordlessly.
He awoke covered in a cold sweat. Sunlight was creeping through the half-open blinds on the windows. Rick could hear moans. He sat up and saw that his Xbox 360 was still on. Dead Rising was playing on the screen. He turned the system and TV off. Rick pulled on his jeans lying next to his bed and ran a hand through his dirty blond hair.
"That's enough of that for a while," he said. But then he heard more moans. Then screams and gunshots. Rick ran over to his window and saw bodies littering the streets. Figures stumbled around and chewed on the bodies, tearing meat from the bones. More were coming and Rick could see puddles of blood where people had fallen and been devoured.
"Oh s***," said Rick as he realized that those were zombies outside his house and that he wasn't dreaming.
His closest friends were all around him, mixed in with the crowd of zombies fighting for survival.
