Nice update.
One thing I noticed as I played the game. Is that Marcus seemed completely ignorant when it came to the locust horde in the game. He knew they'd been attacked and had supposidly been in the war, but he had no Idea what happened when it got dark, and was always surprised, as another member had to describe a new enemy to him. I wondered if they didn't do something to tamper with his memory.
Have you noticed this while playing the game?

You mean when the first Berserker fight happens and during Act 2 when it gets dark and the Kryll come out? I guess the game designers needed some way to tell players about the harder enemies, but the Locust Horde have been attacking the humans for years when the game started. Surely, a soldier would know about all of his enemies. Hoffman, or whoever was in charge, probably did something to Marcus to make him forget everything that happened. Death, you just gave me an idea of what to do with Marcus at the end of the story.

The battle still raged on. The locust army was still advancing on the humans. A good chunk of their number was dead or dying, but more came on. The locusts had pushed the human defenders back and now were using a line of concrete walls and sandbags for cover while the bigger ones rampaged out in the open. The reavers were flying straight for the artillery guns. They strafed across the emplacments pouring fire into them. The hellblaster turrets answered in kind with hundreds of rapid fire shells.
Darek Novan looked into the sight of his longshot at a theron guard fifty feet away. He watch as the locust charged up its torque bow and aimed for some humans hiding behind a pile of sandbags. Darek knew those men didn't see the theron. The torque bow arrow would kill them instantly. He lined up his gun's sight with the theron guard's head steadied his breathing.
Waiting for the right moment, the soldier slowed his breathing. The sounds of battle faded from his hearing as he focused comepletely on timing his shot. The enemy's arrow was almost fully charged. Darek's finger tightened on his trigger. A split second later the theron guard's head exploded like a watermelon. One more second later the torque arrow exploded and massacred all the locust that were near the fallen guard.
Darek smiled as he reloaded. He slipped another bullet into the barrel while the sounds of battle came back. All around his gunfire and explosions could be heard. Curses were muttered and growls carried on the harsh wind that had begun. The wind kicked up the sand making it hard for the soldiers, human and locust, to see their enemies clearly. That is why Darek never took off his helmet. It did have purple stripes painted across it like the rest of his armor, so it was embarassing to be seen wearing it. But, it kept his head secure from bullets. More than one bullet had already ricocheted off his helmet. Without his helmet, Darek would be rubbing sand from his eyes and would have to start using his snub pistol. After all, a sniper can't kill what he can't see.
Darek looked over at the burning wreck of an APC off to the side. About two and a half squads of gears were there. They were taking cover in a ditch surrounded by locust dead. The sniper even saw some reaver corpses lying on the ground. Lucky bastards, he thought. They were over there away from the locust army now. Probably waiting the battle out so they don't have to risk their necks, he thought again. Then he saw them do something crazy. The soldiers began to roadie run across the open terrain to where he and the rest of the humans were holding off the locust.
Just then he heard a growl next to his head. Something hit the side of his helmet causing him to drop his rifle. He crawled in the dirt for it while whatever had hit him gave chase. Then Darek heard the roar of a chainsaw and turned around in time to see a fellow gear carve a wretch up with his lancer's bayonet.
"You okay?" the soldier asked. Dazed and a little shaken, Darek nodded to the man. "Good," he said. Then he pointed to where Darek's longshot lay in the sand. "You may want to pick that up."
Darek got to his feet and ran to where his weapon lay. He picked it up and brushed the sand out of the scope lens. Bullets flew past him and someone shouted, "Keep your goddamn head down over there!"
The sniper crouched behind a low wall and placed his gun's barrel over the top, searching for targets. He found an enemy sniper and blew his brains out before the locust could do that to his.
"C'mon, move your asses!" ordered Dominic Santiago. He and the other survivors were roadie runing across the stretch of open terrain between the ditch they were in minutes ago and the still raging battle ahead. They stopped in some craters a few times to rest and try to kill enemy snipers that spotted them.
A man without a helmet stood his full height with his lancer shouldered to fire at a pocket of locusts. He fired erratically left and right at the locusts on full auto. A sniper round hit his shoulder and knocked him back a step, but he kept on firing. His clip emptied and he ejected it onto the dirt and stone. The gear reached for his next magazine of ammo, but found he was out.
"Shit!" he yelled. The soldier dropped his lancer and drew his snub pistol. "Eat this you bastards!" He fired crazily. One locust fell back off his feet with a bullet through his nose, blood spurting from the exit wound in the back of its head.
A locust sniper leaned out of cover and looked through the blue screen of his scope at the crazy human that had just killed his comrade. He was angry because the locust lying on the bloody ground was his brother. With a snarl the locust sniper pulled the trigger, ending the life of the wretched human soldier.
Dom saw the crazed soldier's head explode in an explosion of gore and his body tip over. "Snipers! Keep your damn heads down!" he ordered. The other soldiers replied with "Yes sir!"
Dom stuck the barrel of his lancer over the tip of the crater he and the others were crouched in and fired a quick burst. The locusts moved back into cover. "Move! Move! Move!" Dom rolled over the edge and took off running. His men followed suit behind him. He heard a sharp scream as the locust snipers took another human life. He prayed that a bullet wouldn't smash into his head and end his life.
Finally they reached their comrades' position and joined them behind the concrete and sandbags. Dom's squad and the second one vaulted over a low wall where a small contingent of wretches were devouring some human corpses. They opened fire and reduced the savage creatures to bloody ribbons.
"Where the hell is Marcus?" asked Dom to a nearby gear.
"He's over there!" replied the soldier, pointing over to where Dom could see a corpser being riddled with bullets while trying to pushs towards a pile of hastily erected sandbags.
"Squad five, with me!" ordered Dom. He and the squad of gears ran for Marcus' position. A soldier with a scavenged boomshot fired it at the corpser's neck. The projectile hit the locust and sent its head flying off on fire. The body fell to the ground with blood flooding out from its neck.
Dom went around the corpser's body to where Marcus and his squad. His squad was right behind him and took up positions with Marcus'. A gear tossed a frag grenade into a group of huddled locusts, shredding them all with shrapnel.
"Nice throw!" Dom heard Marcus say.
"Marcus!" said Dom. His lieutenant turned around at the sound of his voice and tried to act glad to see him.
"Bout damn time you got your ass here," said Marcus.
"My bad. Next time I'll let myself get shot to save you the trouble of kicking my ass." They laughed and Marcus blindfired over the sandbags. A locust screamed from pain in response and fell over dead.
"So what are your orders?"
"Don't die of course. I received a transmission from Hoffman earlier. He said we need to hold position for as long as we can. He is transporting more troops to the four academies right now as reinforcements. Damn fool better get more men here before night. I don't need the f***ing kryll coming while we're still out here."
"Ok, so what's the plan?" Dom heard the familiar sound of wretches and revved his chainsaw. Two of the ape-like locusts jumped over the sandbags. He greeted them with his chainsaw. Cutting one down and then finishing the other with bone breaking kick to the neck. He picked the little monster up and threw it over the barricade.
"Man, those things smell like shit!" he said with a grin. He and Marcus continued to fire at the locusts trying to move up.
"The plan is to wipe these bastards out and fall back into the walls to meet with the reinforcements and reload on ammo. You know, the whole retreat and regroup thing to take care of the wounded and such," said Marcus.
"Right...So then we wait?"
"Yeah, Hoffman said there is a larger army waiting at the edge of the plateau. Apparently the satellites spied them and the guys at intelligence think the army attacking now is a force to be sacrificed to test us."
"Who would've thought the locust were that smart? Hmm, guess we'll have to avoid challenging them in math competitions."
A reaver soared overhead while its gunner fired wildly into the humans. One soldier fell with a muffled gasp as a bullet pierced his throat and exited through his spine. The gears around the fallen human stripped him of his ammo.
Less than a third of the locust horde's test army was left. Only two corpsers, one brumak, and one berserker was left. The female locust's keepers tried to hold her back, but the scent of blood and the noises of battle enraged her. She swung her arms and knocked all of the locust holding her back away. They let go of the chains as they flew through the air and landed on stone and dirt with sickening thumps.
The berserker charged through the human defenses madly. She thrashed about her in confusion. She bumped into a cowering human and roared with hunger. The man knew he was already dead and made no attempt to run. The locust punched his chest in and crushed his head like a hammer smashing a pumpkin. She tore into his chest like a rabid animal, devouring his organs to satiate herself.
A shotgun blast impacted against her head. The slug harmlessly bounced off the thick bone of her head and she turned towards the sound. Again the soldier fired, sealing his fate. The bersker charged like a speeding truck and smashed the man into a boulder. She squished him flat against the rock and enjoyed the spray of blood from the dead human as it hit her dry lips and dripped into her mouth.
The berserker roared again with hunger. She heard something land behind her and turned around to rip her next meal apart. She reached her arms out, bu grabbed nothing. Then the berserker heard a deafening explosion and felt white pain as shrapnel from a grenade at her feet tore through her legs. She collasped in the dirt twitching and roaring in pain. Her left leg was a mess of mangled flesh and bone. She heard something step towards her and she thrashed around wildly hoping to grab one last bite of human flesh. Never again would she get to feel the coppery taste of blood on her tongue. An exposive landed by her head and seconds later it detonated. Her headless body convulsed and finally lost all signs of life as her heart drummed its last beats.
"That was f***ing close," said Marcus standing next to the berserker's headless corpse. Dom was beside him with his lancer raised at the locust. More artillery fire rained down and the last brumak went down in an explosion of flames. Its remaining ammo for its missile launchers detonated, taking the two remaining corpsers out as well. All that remained were the locust foor troops and a small unit of reavers.
As one, the humans and their tanks opened fire on the remaining locusts. Many fell in the barrage of fire. Some of them, seeing a chance to run, took their chances and fled. Sniper fire chased after them, blasting through chest cavities and eradicating heads. The reavers were being slaughtered by the numerous hellblaster turrets placed along the battlements. They fell in ones, twos, and threes until none remained.
Up in the sky the sun was close to setting. Soon night would fall and the darkness would spread. Then the kryll would come to devour whoever was caught outside the safety of the walls and lights.

Well, Hound, as with everything else you write, it was well written. I'm thankful that it wasn't too intensive into the G.o.W. story... Otherwise I would've been a little more than simply confused. At the beginning you had a few fragments I noticed, but they seemed to be just in the prologue. Otherwise, flawless.

Nice update. One thing I noticed as I played the game. Is that Marcus seemed completely ignorant when it came to the locust horde in the game. Death, you just gave me an idea of what to do with Marcus at the end of the story. Yeah I realize most of it was to tell the story to the audience, but they could of done that by explaining it to a rookie member, or Marcus's own inner dialogue. And yeah as a Soldier he should of known those things but... Unless I missed it while playing.. I don't think they ever mentioned just how long Marcus had been sitting in that jail cell. Maybe he just really hadn't seen those types of Locusts before. But still I vote for the fact that his Memory has been tampered with. Probably part of his sentencing, or maybe even to cover up a conspiracy. I imagine Marcus knew too much about something. Something about his father, and probably the real reason the Locust emerged. Just food for thought. The story is great so far Hound, you have a great eye for detail. I noticed you keep referring to the "roadie" run. I know the developers nicknamed it that, but its a tecnical term for the way the camera shakes and the screen stretches as if there was a camera man following the character. So the term is unneeded in the story, for it really doesn't have to do with how their running.. their just... running. And while your way is more realistic, the Berserkers can only be killed by the Hammer of Dawn.

Death I'm saving the Hammer for later. Anyway, Gears' designers made the game so that the only way ou can kill a Berserker is with the Hammer of Dawn(excluding the third one. BTW, has anyone successfully used the fuel tank on the train to kill the Berserker? I tried once by shooting it with a Lancer, but it didn't explode and I got ran over by the Berserker.).
I've also heard some talk about grenade tagging a berserker after using the Hammer on it. I have yet to try this, but seeing as how I'm still on Spring Break I'll be sure t give it a try. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

I used the fuel tank on the Beserker actually. But its the same as unhooking the train.she catches on fire and gets thrown off. She doesn't explode. So Its not evident that she's dead. She's just tossed off the train, and isn't a threat anymore.

Uh, Berserkers are all female. Oh god, I would feel really sorry for the Locusts if Berserkers were the only females. Reproducing with a berserker would totally suck.
What'd you hit the fuel tank with? A Torque Bow? Grenade?

I hadn't realized they were all female, thats interesting. I hit the fuel tank with a grenade. It took a couple tries. I thought I had missed with the first one or two, but maybe it took more than one grenade to do the job.

Hmm, I'll give that a try later today. Did the Berserker catch fire and then jump off the train? Or did the blast send her ass flying?

Been a while, and it was the first time I played through that it happened, but I believe she caught fire and was thrown off the back of the train.
