If the relationship between Microsoft and Epic Games seemed strained after Unreal Championship 2 was jettisoned from Microsoft’s publishing list, Gears of War is all the evidence gamers need that the storied developer and powerhouse publisher have kissed and made up.
Scheduled not as a launch title for Xbox 360 but as a second-wave game in 2006, Gears of War is the brainchild of “Cliffy B.,” the all-star head honcho at Epic Games and the face of the fabled Unreal Engine. As a result, Gears of War, which uses Unreal Engine 3, pulls out all the stops on its way toward visual supremacy, then adds an extra helping of real-life physics and real-time lighting. Truly, Gears of War looks like a next-generation videogame.
Open the cover of Epic’s next book, however, and gamers will find not a blast-happy shooter in the traditional Unreal vein, but a squad-based shooter more reminiscent of the Tom Clancy series. “I call it ‘stop ‘n pop’ instead of ‘run ‘n gun,’” Cliffy B. told DailyGame. And he’s right. With several survival horror elements mixed in, Gears of War has a decidedly Rainbow-Six-meets-Resident-Evil feel.

The story of Gears of War is typical apocalyptica, with its unique plot points still wrapped in secrecy. What we do know of the plot is that humanity (as it exists on the planet Sera) has gone through a sort of golden age, a period in which everything has gone incredibly well and cities have flourished. Yet much like the oil crisis the real-world Earth is currently trying to avoid, humans in Gears of War sought -- and in this case found -- a new energy source called “imulsion,” one that promised unimaginable power and prosperity.
As humans are wont to do, the Seran governments fought over this power source, eventually obliterating the sense of peace the planet had enjoyed during its golden age. Amid this battle, an alien race called the Locust Horde emerged from the underworld, a race whose motivation is unknown but whose aggression and focus on complete destruction is excruciatingly clear. Having battled one another for years, the Serans are left with no other choice but to rely on inmates as soldiers, men whose lives are expendable but whose thirst for violence is the only thing that mirrors the Locust’s. Enter the main character, a former military prisoner, and his squad.
As technologically savvy as the humans are, with their advanced weaponry and armor, the Locust are equally efficient with their organic weapons and animal “vehicles.” Following in the footsteps of several great shooters, Gears of War will allow Seran players to pick up and use Locust weapons, and although nobody would officially go on record saying it, Epic Games is also considering letting players ride Locust animals.
Based on the Unreal Engine 3, Gears of War features incredible graphics that aren’t just fun to look at but are equally fun to manipulate. Key objects in the environment are destructible, such as doors and windows, while others such as cars can be manipulated to provide cover. And that’s where the strategic elements of Gears of War first rear their gorgeous head.

Diving behind and using cover, as well as communicating with teammates, is essential to survival in Gears of War, much like it was in the Rainbow Six series. Once behind cover, players can issue squad commands, shoot over their head and even toss grenades using a trajectory interface like that in Full Spectrum Warrior. Just don’t stay under cover too long; if it takes enough damage, it won’t be cover for long.
Also like Full Spectrum Warrior, Gears of War will feature co-operative play via Xbox Live. Epic went on the record as saying online co-op will support two players minimum, but the developer is hoping to support four by the time the game ships. Such support will come in handy during the game’s “open-ended” segments, with aspects of each level designed for flanking and other non-linear tactics.
In a nice nod to pick-up-and-playability, the co-op options will also be available at any time, so if a friend sees you playing online, he or she can join your in-progress campaign to battle the Locust with you immediately. In addition, save points will be generous, and Gears of War is designed in 10- to 20-minute segments for gamers who don’t have 45 minutes to devote between saves. Still, Epic assures us those 10 to 20 minutes will be some of the most intense that gamers have experienced.
As a game built on the Unreal engine, Gears of War will of also support versus multiplayer modes, and although the modes may involve single players as well as players controlling entire squads, Epic is keeping the exact options close to their chest.
Even in its early stage at E3, Gears of War was phenomenal. Games this entertaining, intense and beautiful are exactly what we envision when we think of “next-generation videogames.” When Gears of War ships for Xbox 360 in 2006, we will be among the first to call in sick to witness the horrific shooter Epic is cooking up in its next-gen kitchen.
