This is Part one of a 3 part series
Pt. 1
The Hatching
Theodoric charged across the wasteland of the Dragon Downs. Countless soldiers followed him obediantly, their swords shining in the pale light of early morning. "For the Empire!" Theodoric cried as he met his enemy, a great dragon. The dragon reared into the air, cursing in its own language. It came down with a crash, smashing scores of soldiers under its claws feet. Theodoric aimed his sword at the massive beast, aiming for its neck. The dragon unfurled its wings and flapped them. It caused a massive whirlwind that tore into the troops, sending them flying into the air. Theodoric prayed ot his gods and let loose with his sword, sending it flying true into the dragons neck. The dragon lurched onto the ground, blood spurting from the wound. The remaining soldiers cheered as the lifeblood of the last great dragon died. Theodoric pulled the sword from the dragon's neck and raises it high. "Today, human kind has gained full control of this world. Our world." The crowd cheered at this comment, confident that humans will lead the world to a greater good that the dragons could never understand. Little did they know is that they upset a very careful balance...
Theodoric sat lonely at the tavern, thinking over what he'll do next. All I ever did was fight... What can I do now? Theodoric pondered as he ordered another mug of ale. Maybe I could settle down... He dismissed that idea after a minute of thinking it over. I have no land, no nothing. I can't support a family. Theodoric reached into his pocket and put several gold coins on the table and left the tavern. Theodoric walked outside into the morning glare of Kaorn, a large farming village in the mountains. Theodoric walked down the street, passing shouting merchants and mumbling bums as he went past several alleys. A small, raspy voice came from behind him, calling his name. Theodoric whipped around and saw a old woman, hunched with age. "Come, my child." She called softly. Theodoric went to here, curious as to how she knows him. The woman held out a smallish package to him, beckoning him to take it. "Take this, it is the key to our survival." Theodoric grew very suspicious. "What do you want?" He asked, drawing a shortsword from its old, hardened scabbard. "I ask for nothing, other that you take this. I can't protect it any longer." Theodoric took the small package and unwrapped it. It was a dragon egg!
"How did you get this?" Theodoric asked excitedly. The woman didn't answer. "Protect it, its the key to us all..." She whispered. The woman then collasped onto the pavement and disappeared, leaving Theodoric with the egg and a surprised look. Theodoric looked around and then headed into the crowd of farmers looking to sell their goods. Theodoric hurried along, covering the egg with the cloth it came in. He hurried to the inn he was staying at and headed to his room. He laid the egg on the table and thought about what to do with it.
A. Smash it, it isn't worth keeping
B. Sell it, might as well get something tangible out of it
C. Keep it, see what will happen.
