I react quickly, dropping feet first into the hole. I can feel the wind of something narrowly missing me as my head drops below the gap in the ground. I land hard on the solid surface below. I look up at the hole above me and see two glowing eyes peering back down. What in Oblivion is that thing? I hear that ungodly growl for a second time as saliva from the beast, drips down landing on my boot. I wipe my boot clean, and return my sight upwards. Gone… whatever it was, its gone.
I take a moment to look around at my new surroundings. I’m in an underground cave of somekind, the dark blue stone acts as a stage for the dancing flames of the broken lamp at my feet. Damnit… No use whining about it now. I can’t see too far from the dying light, but the room is rather small. There is only one door, behind it I can see another light source, so perhaps not all is lost. Blood lies in a puddle on the floor near me, and leads off into a dark corner of the room. As my eyes adjust to the new darkness around me, I see the figure of the Leyawiin soldier. I approach him cautiously.
He’s alive I realize as I kneel next to the wounded soldier. His breathing is erratic, and his eyes are glazed over. His side has a deep cut, and blood drips rapidly from the wound, staining the stones crimson with its touch. “What happened?” I ask him the obvious question, mainly to see if he can respond, but also to keep his mind off the pain. There may be more going on here than I know. He looks me in the eyes. His face is pale and sweat runs across his brow. He struggles as he tries to answer.
“W..We, C..chased, the rogue into the…The marsh.. We were right behind him.. Caught up.. But…” His teeth clenched together as a pain shoots through him. “The monster… Erh..hh…. The beast. It… It attacked us. I.. I don’t know what happened to the others. I ran… I ran. Did you see….the others?.. Did you see Kamiin?” I can only assume he’s talking about the other guard. “Your fellow soldier is dead I’m afraid.” “Noo… I shoul.. should of, stayed with him. His fate should be mine. Thank.. Thank the Nine you found me citizen. I will see your rewarded for this.” I didn’t have the heart to tell him.. He wasn’t going to heal from those wounds. It seems he would share his brothers fate, after all.
“Did you see the beast?.. What was it?” I ask in vain, its too late. He’s passed. I lower his eyelids with the palm of my hand. Concealing the lifeless gaze that was just moments before, looking to me for help. I rise to my feet and decide to deal with my own dilemma. I reach for the door, only to find it locked from the otherside. The wood is old, but sturdy. I imagine it is used as a storage area of some kind. I gather my strength and focus it on the ball of my foot as I raise it to the door. WHAM. Its no use… This door isn’t budging with mere brute force. I look up at the hole in the ceiling, its much to hight to jump too, and the walls are too smooth to climb. I have to get out of this room somehow… or I too will join the soldiers fate.

I’ve picked a few locks in my time, but the lock in this case is unreachable by normal means. It appears to be chained shut from the other side, I can see the chain, by looking through the crease between the door and the wall. Suddenly I get an Idea. I remove my dagger from its sheath and carefully slide it down the side of the door. I make contact with the chain on the other side, and try to get my dagger to balance between a link in the chain. It works, the weight of the chains holds the dagger in place. “Now I just need….”
I look along the ground for a large rock. Nothing. Someone had removed everything from this room. Only me and the guard remain. The guard could come in handy, but he must of thrown his weapon and most of his armor away while he was running. All that really remained of his armor were his…. "Boots".
I doubt myself for a moment, taking from the most recently departed, but he’s not going to need them anymore. I remove the soldiers heavy iron boots and continue with my plan. I stand to the side of the dagger still with the appearance of being stuck to the wall, and raise the heavy boot above my head. I pray to my ancestors that the blade holds firm as I come down with enough force to bring down an orc.
The dagger falls swiftly to the ground with a clank, that rings throughout the cave. I hear the metal slither of the chain falling from its position on the other side of the door. Sounds like it worked. I pick up my dagger returning it to its place at my side, while giving the soldier a nod of thanks. I grasp the door handle firmly with my hand. Turning it slowly, I try to prepare myself mentally, for what might await me on the other side. I take a deep breath, open the door, and step inside.

I step into a much larger room. It is well lit and appears to be some kind of dining area. I quietly shut the door behind me, and take a look around. The room appears to be empty, so I take a step further in. The walls are still stone and barren, but the room is decorated nicely. Paintings of Tamriel are strung about, some I recognize from my travels. Most of the room seems to have everything that one would naturally find in a dining area of a house. A small circular wooden table sits in the middle of the room, a single chair to its side. Not far from the table, against the wall lay two wooden cabinets.
I open one of the doors slowly to find food, most of it rotten, and inedible. A pain returns to my stomach, but its different than before. This time its hunger. I realize I haven’t eaten in a while, and the site of food, albeit disgusting food, has triggered my memory. I close the pantry, and check the other, just incase. Nothing.. just some stale, moldy bread. Disappointed, I check the rest of the room. I can see a large wooden door at the far end of the room, and another room seems to be around the corner across from the door. Still nothing seems out of the ordinary till I spot something against the wall, on the other side of the table.
It’s a small cage. Large enough only to keep a medium sized dog, but the bars are several inches thick. Inside the cage seems to be Alchemy equipment, and odd ingredients. Nothing I’m particularly interested in, but the size of the lock suggests the owner is. Worth nothing to me, I leave it be and continue on into the next room. I wish I hadn’t…
Again, a quick glance would of suggested another normal looking living area, a small cot lie in the corner of the room, and paintings yet again dawn the walls. I even get the feeling I’ve been here before. Yet this room was much differen’t than the last. Thick scratch marks reside on everything from the shattered wooden chairs, and barrels, to the stone walls themselves Blood is splattered in every direction. A motionless body of a dark elf lies in the middle of the floor, almost as disfigured as the Leyawiin guardsman I ran into before.
The face remains on the victim in this room, and I find it… too… familiar. Strange, and unsettling. Part of me wants to know whats happening, but mostly.. I just want to get the hell out of here. I grab a woven blanket that was being used as a decoration, and use it to cover the dunmer’s body. I grab a lantern off the wall, and make my way to the door, thankful to find it unlocked as it opens with ease.
I step through the door closing it quickly behind me and find myself outside again. The smell of the marsh dampened by the westward wind. I take a few steps away from the door and look around. The brush is thick ahead of me, and a path seems to go off to the left of the door. Then I notice something… I approach the door I exited, and see a spot just above it where a lantern should hang. I turn quickly and lower the lantern to the ground… Tracks….. My tracks...
