I just played a game I had heard about through G4, but had never seen in the store, or heard much more about it in its release, but...
I have to say, just as the first time I played GTA3 I was amazingly surprised by the greatness of this game. The game is Earth Defense Force 2017.
This game was freakin Awesome! The graphics in your character and surroundings are like a high def version of a high end X-box game, but the enemies (which is all you can really see most of the time) look quite stunning. The lighting and textures of the creatures and robots are well done in deed.
The game is a third person shooter, where the earth is invaded by aliens from another planet. At first its just these large UFO's like Independence Day, but then you fight giant bugs. Your in an open city like GTA, but EVERYTHING is destructible like mercenaries. Even more soo, for you will see not only skyscrapers tumble, and people fly, but trees will also be cut down in the hail of fire.
The enemies are amazing for the smallest enemy is over ten times your size. Giant Ants, and spiders, followed by enourmous robots, and a Giant lizard much like Godzilla. Even though they look miles up you can shoot down those huge UFO's. This is what the ID4 game should of been like or better yet, starship troopers.
While the size and huge scale of the creatures is amazing, its the ammount of them thats truly spectacular. Hundreds, if not thousands of these creatures come at you at once. Although your pretty much always with a group of soldiers like you, your completely outnumbered a few hundred to one. No lag, or slow down, except when explosions fill the screen and I believe thats intended, like shell shock. The whole game can be played two player co-op split screen, and retains the entire story mode, and cutscenes, unlike alot of multiplayer shooters.
The weapons are many, I have unlocked 65 on easy mode, and you get better weapons on higher difficulties, which their are five higher. The fun factor is off the charts, I can't even describe the feeling of standing in a huge battlefield and seeing this enormous army of bugs running towards you, miles away in the distance. Sniping what I can from high ground awaiting their innevitable arrival.
really making the game tense and strategic, is that all though you have many many awesome weapons you can choose from. (after unlocking them of course) Homing missiles, auto turrets, flame throwers, mines, and some that ultilize alien technology like an area burst, or acid gun. and all the normal weapons, like shotguns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers and grenades. Still with all these weapons to choose from, you can only take two with you into battle. That choice between each mission easily means life or death.
The next mission gives you a quick briefing of what to expect to help you out. Take a sniperrifle into a cave level, and you just wasted your time. they'll be no time to snipe in those close corners. Each weapon has its up and downs, adding to the strategy. their isn't just one shot gun, their are many, each with differen't stats. My weapons of choice once I obtained them were: A sniper rifle with rapid fire. It had a 6X zoom and 20 round clip. good for sniping but also handy at close range. And a rapid fire rocket launcher that fired off 20 rockets in just a few seconds. Rockets weren't very accurate, but at close range I could do some real damage. Both weapons had long reload times so I had to strategically pick my places to run out of ammo.
Guns reload when clip is deleted, and you have infinite ammo. not everyday you see a game that starts you off with an assult rifle, a rocket launcher and infinite ammo in the first level. Its all about runnin and gunnin, and I can't remember when I had this much fun. The Epic last battle, felt like one of the best Zelda enemies on steraroids. My screen was literally full of gunfire and lazer blasts and enemies the entire time. How anyone could survive this game on the hardest difficulty is beyond me.
Most stages do have a few vehicles you can use. Tanks, hover bikes, helicopters, and walking mechs.
Although my one complaint is that the controls for the helicopter are so bad it is almost unusable. I did manage to get better with it and take out a couple of the huge godzilla like beasts, but ants and stuff, I still was almost just shooting at random.
Well hell... *looks up* I think I've gone on enough about this game. SO GO PLAY IT NOW!!
