Varika gazed airily at the dying embers in the fire before her. Despite being, exhausted she could not bring herself to sleep. It had been a long day, a long, tiring day filled with running and hiding and lying-the kinds of things criminals did. But she was no criminal.
I am a runaway.-she mused-I am free...
"You need your rest, my Lady." Said a man standing across the fire pit. His back was to Varika, and he stared deeper into the woods in wich they took refuge. He was a massive man- easily seven feet tall. His shoulders were broad, and he had an overall stalwart apperance, accentuated by the dark grey plate mail he was wearing.
"We are far away from the manor now, Uthro, you can call me by my first name." Returned Varika.
"T'would be much too informal, my lady."
"Informal was not only allowing me to run away, but helping me to do so, and accompanying me on my journey." She said with a weary smile.
After a brief pause Uthro sighed deeply and turned around. He sat down on a log in front of the fire and rested his chin on his hands, closing his eyes.
"You are my charge." He said. " I am honorbound to serve and protect you and you alone. I have never sworn fealty to either of your parents."
His eyes remained closed as he spoke. Varika thought he looked as though he had been reciting the words, as if he had said them before. They were nonetheless comforting.
"You didn't have to come with me." She said quietly.
Uthro stood up slowly
"Yes I did." He said. "For both our sakes."
Varika stood up, walked around the fire and embraced the armor clad man.
"Thank you." She said.
He put one massive arm around her and sighed again. But the short-lived, peaceful moment was shattered by a shrieking noise. Startled, Varika jumped back and looked around for the source of the sound. Uthro unsheathed his sword and turned back toward the woods.
"Get near the fire." He said
A dimunitive humanoid creature revealed itself, lunging from behind a bush. Varika recognized it immediatly as a goblin- green skin, a long crooked nose, and large ragged ears. It was wearing some random bits of armor and wielded a crude-looking blade.
"Must be a stray, there are more and more of these every week." Said Uthro as the ugly creature ran towards him, still screaming. He shifted into an attack-ready stance.
When it apparently thought it was in striking distance, it jumped at Uthro, sword pointed at his face. Uthro stepped forward with suprising grace and brought the hilt of his own sword down the creatures bare skull. It made a sputtering noise and fell abrubtly to the ground, blood pouring from it's head creating a hideous rosette were it came to rest.
"Are you alright?" Uthro asked Varika.
"I'll be fine, but that kind of thing takes some getting used to."
Constructive criticism and ,Hell, any posting would be appreciated.
