This is something I had to write for english class and I felt it came out good so I'm posting it here. Let me know what you think....Oh and I better get an A for this lol
It was a bright and sunny afternoon in Canterbury . It had been for quite some time actually and the townsfolk rejoiced in the marvelous weather. They laughed, cheered, and went about their day-to-day activities with joyful regards. But one man didn’t participate in the splendid weather. Instead he sat in a bar and drank his fill as closer and closer he came to the serene period of intoxication. This man was named Remus.
In fact he did this every day which resulted in the rather lack luster appearance he showed. His trim body now masked by the pot belly growing, his brown hair messed by his lack of care in his drunken state. It was obvious to others that he was drunk by the smell he gave off and his bloodshot eyes.
Although in this state his personality barely changed. For either drunk or sober his prideful boasts never seemed to dissipate. Even now in fact he was boasting about a rather nice hunt that no one really believed he went on. He must have finally struck a nerve with some one because a young man suddenly got up and began to argue with him
“Ey old man! Shut it! No one wants to hear from an old gee…geezer like you!” The boy said, and it was obvious that he was drunk too. Even though every one in the bar was in agreement with the boy what he said wasn’t entirely true for Remus at age 33 was still pretty young himself.
As the arguing went on Remus began to get a little hot headed and snapped. He jumped up and punched the boy in the face. Stunned by the punch the boy stumbled to the ground and hit his head on one of the tables knocking him out almost instantly.
“Ya see…ya see that ‘hic’? Don’t mess wit me! I could take all a ya down wit my bare hands. Don’t for…forget I’m a nobleman. I’m better than all a ya. I’m like a god to you. Yea tha…that’s right I’m your god! Bow to me peasants!” Remus proclaimed.
But his speech was cut short by the sound of a single lightning bolt crashing into a building somewhere in the middle of town. All the towns folk went silent every one but Remus that is, who was too drunk to realize the impossibility of a lightning bolt striking on a clear day blue sky like today. But being in the state that he was he took their silence as something of fear for him instead of what if really was.
Seeing this, Remus laughed and went on his way but took mind to purchase a bottle of wine to take with him. Upon leaving however something snagged at his light blue robe, causing it to tear and send him tumbling out the door.
While on his way home all the townsfolk went out of their way to give Remus dirty looks and one boy even dared to rune up and kick Remus in the shin. This angered Remus to the point where he screamed at the child until they boy ran away. All this confused him because he had always thought he was well liked in town. However, this was far from the truth as most people in fact hated him.
Nearing his home the smell of smoke began to fill Remus' nose. With further study he noticed his house was the source of the smoke. Quickly he ran to it and saw a glimpse of his once beautiful home before it collapsed to the ground.
"Oh god my house it's gone! Bu...but my wife was in there! She must be dead...this can't be good."Remus said, quite nonchalantly considering the situation. "I've got to...to get out of here!" Shouted Remus.
Then suddenly he took off. Running as fast as he could pushing children and elderly aside as he ran. He kept running until he reached the end of town and then stopped to take a break and a large drink from the wine he bought earlier. After a few minutes he took off again into some woods near by. He ran and ran until he was lost. By this time he was out of breath and could barely stand. He sat down and drank what was left of the wine. After some time had past and the wine had all been gone he got to his feet. He was about to leave when suddenly a rogue wolf jumped at him from behind a bush. The wolf tackled him and sunk its massive jaws into his arm. Remus screamed out in pain as he tried to shake the wolf off of him but to no avail. Then he remembered the bottle of wine. He grabbed at it and smashed it over the wolf's head. Sure enough the wolf let go and dashed into the woods with a yelp.
"Hey your not getting away from me."Remus said as he ran after the wolf. But as he ran his foot caught hold of a root and he tripped. When he got up the wolf had vanished.
"Ya ain't gettin away that easy!"shouted Remus, and it was clear he was still drunk. He continued to run in the direction he thought the wolf had gone. After a while he gave up and was about to head back when he saw a pond in the middle of the forest. Some thing drew him to that pond. He walked up to it and kneeled before it. His reflection shown like a mirror in the crystal blue water. He took a long drink from the water and watched as it rippled clearing his reflection away. The rippling slowly stopped and he saw his reflection return. But something was different. It was him alright but cleaned up. It's eyes weren't bloodshot, the hair was neatly combed, the robe was clean and wasn't ripped at all. Then it spoke.
"Remus I've come to help you. You need to stop your prideful nature. If you don't I am certain you will die!" Said the reflection in Remus' voice.
"Am...am I drunk?"
"Yes...but that's not the point. We can deal with that problem later. Right now you must listen to me. I'm here to help you"
"I don't need your help! I'm I'm..."Remus began to say but was cut short by a fit of vomiting into the water.
"Oh thanks I really needed that." The reflection said in a sarcastic tone. " ' sigh' why do I always get the drunks? Can't I once get a normal person to help?" The reflection said to himself.
"I told ya I don't need any help! Especially not from a stupid reflection like you!
"What ever. If you want to die that's your problem." The reflection said as it faded away.
"Good I don't need ya!" Remus said as he got up and left. After about an hour or two he made his way back to town. The effects of the alcohol were now fading away and Remus could think straight. He decided to go back to his house to see if anything survived. As he approached his house he could again hear the murmuring of others. Then suddenly a guard ran up to him.
"Stop you vile scum! You are under arrest for the murder of your wife. You're going to rot in prison you pig!" Shouted the guard.
"No wait...I didn't do it...It was a fire, a fire killed her!" Pleaded Remus.
"Save it! We have all the evidence we need to put you away for good!" Hearing this Remus pushed the guard aside and ran. He ran as fast as he could and refused to stop. Losing breath, Remus began to worry that he wouldn't escape. He was about to give up but then something made his heart jump for joy. A young man was waving at him to get him into a basement door. He quickly darted towards it and jumped into the open door. The young man then ushered him to follow him. The boy lead him through a dark passageway filled with a few candles and more than the average amount of cobwebs. After a few minutes the boy stopped and turned to him.
"Ok we're far enough now. We don't need to worry about them anymore."
Who are you boy and why are you helping me?"
"My name isn't important right now...but I can tell you I'm a leader of a secret group of rebels. I helped you in hopes that you would join us in our goal to over throw the king. If you agree you will work for me and I will make sure you don't get captured by those guards back there. So what do you say?"
Work for you? I am a nobleman boy I don't work for peasants like you. Thanks but no thanks I don't need help hiding." Remus said as he turned about and left. In a matter of minutes Remus was outside the building and began to sneak around. But as he did a guard saw him and grabbed Remus before he had a chance to escape. The guard then dragged him off to the jail house. After a grueling hour of having to deal with Remus cry and beg for mercy he finally arrived at the jail and threw Remus in an empty cell.
"But wait I’m innocent! I didn't kill her!" Cried Remus.
"Shut up. I’m not going to talk to a drunk like you!"
"But I'm not drunk!"
"Shut up. I said you were drunk!"
"But actually I'm quite sober."
"Or are you so drunk that you think you're sober but in reality you're drunk?
"But...I..umm"
"See you're slurring your words. You're drunk." said the gaurd as he walked off with a smirk on his face.
Remus sat in his dark cell and began to cry . But then he heard a familiar voice and his tears stopped.
"You're an idiot, you know that?"
"Reflection what are you doing here?"
"I have a name you know? It's Calypso."
"Calypso? Calypso the reflection...that's stupid."
"Shut up I'm here to help you."
"Then tell me why am I here? I didn't kill her."
"Well I thought even an idiot like you could tell, but I guess I was wrong. You're being framed!"
"What! But why?"
"Well to be frank no one here really likes you. In fact most of them actually hate you. I'm surprised you actually had a wife."
"Why would any one hate me?"
"Hmm lets see. You're arrogant, a drunk, you're rich, and you get into a lot of fights. To be honest I don't like you."
"Then why are you helping me?"
" 'sigh' I have to. It's my job...but any way I guess I have to help you. If you don't stop your arrogant ways you're going to die...and you could stand to go to church once in awhile."
" 'sigh' Fine I'll go to church. I'll give to the poor. Whatever.”
"...Good. You do that...So I'm going to help you escape and then I don't really have to talk to you any more. That's fine by me."
" How will you help me?"
" 'sigh' I'll unlock the doors and you can just walk out. I do however suggest that you leave town."
"Sure what ever I'll do any thing just get me out of here."
"Fine here you go." Said Calypso . Then all of a sudden there was a loud click and the doors flew open.
"Wow...that was cool. Could you perhaps summon me up some wine for the road?"
"You really drink too much. It's a problem that you need to work out."
"Hey I can stop when ever I want. Besides you're here to fix my arrogance problem. I'm perfectly happy being a drunk."
"Whatever, I just want to go. Here's your precious wine." Said Calypso as a bottle of wine appeared in Remus'
hand." Ok now get out of here." Said Calypso as his voice faded away.
Remus snuck out of prison and after awhile he finally made his way to the outside.
"Wow that was surprisingly easy. Not a good impression of the English penalty system." Thought Remus. "Well I should probably go to church and repent." Thought Remus.
He started his journey and made sure not to bring attention to himself. After a few minutes of walking he saw the church on the horizon. He took out his bottle of wine and opened the bottle.
"Well here goes nothing." Said Remus as he drank down the bottle of wine. He lifted his foot to walk but stopped abruptly and grabbed at his side. He screamed out in pain, fell to the ground and began to shout.
"Oh foal liquor why have you betrayed me!. I have always loved you my sweet nectar of the gods! Oh cruel irony that this a mere drink could kill me!" Shouted Remus as he writhed in pain. Others came up to him and at first he thought they would help him but instead they just stole from him as he lay there dying. "Damn pride" He said and they were his last words. As quickly as his story began it came to an end. The man who dared to compare himself with god inevitably died by his own will.
