If you find anything confusing or have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to post it. I'm always open for critique.
Sitting under the willow’s vast, sweeping branches, I felt welcome security. It was almost like I could do anything, including changing form, and not a soul would notice or care. I sighed, knowing that that was a mere fantasy, for if I did try it, I would be spotted immediately, even from this distance from town. Curse the flat landscape that stretched for miles on end, without so much as a single mound of dirt to make a difference. I cast these thoughts from my mind and instead focused intently on the blazing horizon, marking the end of another repetitive day.
As the final pinprick of color succumbed to the darkness, the stars shone wildly, casting their myths down once again. I scrambled up into the forked limbs, strong enough to hold my wiry frame, yet malleable enough to adjust to my comfort. I sighed, settled into a suitable arrangement, and let sleep wash over me.
My golden eyes fluttered open, only to see inky black locks interrupting their view of the glorious blue of the sky. My fingers combed through them, pushing them backwards with no desired effect. They still flopped over into my face. I accepted defeat from this battle and pulled myself into a sitting position with my legs hanging lazily over a branch.
So, I pondered to myself, what shall I do today? I could always… No, the humans would see. I’d be caught and burned, just like Rowan and Triga and everyone else. I countered this thought with, but if I flew high enough, no one would notice. Besides, I haven’t stretched my wings for months now…
I knew what I was going to do.
Amber wings flared into the sky, forcing the air underneath them downward in a frantic attempt to gain altitude. I was successful (as always) and was quickly concealed atop the clouds. As I lazily skimmed them, I wondered why people would resent creatures like me. Was it envy for the fact we actually had the freedom to explore otherwise untouched expanses above them, or simply hatred like we all guessed for so long? I sighed.
There was no place to land unnoticed for awhile, and I was out of shape for this. Risking everything, I dove slightly beneath the clouds, searching for an abandoned alleyway to drop into. All the while, I was praying that I wouldn’t be seen from some human who decided to look skyward. My body was screaming at me to let it stop and rest, to find somewhere to land… and fast. I folded my exhausted wings slightly to allow a shallow dive, becoming steeper with every second. I streaked into the only alley that was anywhere near me, and began the change.
As a dragon, our kind actually shrank, becoming the size of a plump housecat. Bones popped and cracked, sounding rather disgusting, though a soothing, peaceful unawareness overcame any pain we could feel. But becoming human again was a bit awkward. Wings shriveled away from our bodies, bone and all, so that all was left were our birthmark scars in their places. Limbs stretched themselves grotesquely, bones shifting, growing. The whole process took about three minutes. A plus, though, was somehow, our clothes were still on when we were fully human (or so it seemed) again.
As my dark claws clacked on the cobblestone, I felt the normal tingling sensation on my back. My wings were incinerating, only to re-grow later. Bones popped, joints repositioned themselves. My entire face, which was distorted to become a muzzle, shrank and molded itself to become human. Only my eyes never changed. They were always a steady, imploring amber gold color.
Though my own eyes stared at a faded wall, I felt another's curious gaze on me. I whipped around, still changing. A girl, not much older than I, was staring directly at me, with a look that seemed almost triumphant. Uh-oh… I was in trouble, and needed to run, fast. However, the stupid human was blocking my only exit on foot. I did the only thing I could. Picking up speed ever so quickly as my human frame snapped together completely whole, I lowered my head like a bull, ready to strike.
