Chapter 1: There Can Be No Light Without Shadow
My name is Remis Hatzuma, and I am here to tell you my past, and why I was chosen to be a Twilight Guardian....
It all started 9 years ago I guess. I went to the academy of sorcery. The day had no clouds, and a clear blue sky covered my hometown Stromford like a warm autumn blanket. That day was the day my mom enrolled me into the academy. I didnt want to go, but ever since my dad died, I had to help out anyway I could.
Parents of the sorcery students had lessened taxes and also the academy provided housing for the family. So, I was enrolled.
I was holding my mom's soft hand. She had waist length ebony hair and tanned skin. Her eyes were a fair shade of blue and she had a kindly set face. I could always depend on mom to make everything better back then, before it happened. We came upon the giant gates of the academy. They were made of blue painted oak. They stood around 15 feet high and about 20 feet long. They were giant, or atleast looked like it when I was 5. We went through the giant gates that were already opened and my mom bent down to whisper something in my ear as 2 men in dark blue robes came walking torwards us.
"Remis, I have to leave you for now, the nice men over there will help you through the school" she said in her usual gentle voice. Then she was gone a minute later.
Then there I was, all alone. Maybe If I knew what was going to happen, maybe I would've run as fast as a good. I dont know where I would've went at the time, but that still didnt change one fact. I didnt know.
The men walked up to me and I could see their faces. The on on the right was a generally decent man. Well, thats what he looked like. With the exception he had a giant scar ranging from his right ear down to his medium left cheek. It cut across his nose and had a strange curve in it. It freaked me out. The one beside him, was equally as weird. He wasntugly or anything, but it ws something about the strange shade of green in his eyes. I could feel it corsin gthrough my bones, uneasyness, fear, and much more.
"Hello?" I had asked them in my small voice.
The one with the scar looked a tme in the eyes. "This is Professor Kinomie and I am Professor Eamonik. Follow us, we will take you to your new quarters" he had said. His voice was shady, and hard. Yet you could hear his curiosity. I didnt know why he was looking at me strangely, but I followed him anyways. I walkled on the cement and h lead me through a plain wooden door. One of many, actually.
"Mr. Eamonik, I'm hungry. Can I go get a snack?" I had asked. I was 5 at the time, and well, I was hungry. Its not like I knew any better.
Eamonik turned around wiftly and cuffed me on my left ear. "No you little mongruel, I'm not your mommy." He had said in a defined voice. "Its Profesor Eamonik, not Mr. Eamonik, got it?" he asked. I held back my tears with all that I could but one still managed to get through my left eye. He didnt seem to care. I think a twisted and insane smirk ma have gotten through his mouth more just a moment.
"Yes, Professor Eamonik" I said in my wavering voice. I had realized then I needed not to get on this guy's bad side. They say time heals all wounds, but, I think that only applies physically. Time may just help mental ones more.
Chapter 2: Exisitence
I was worried. Professor Eamonik had tooken me to a pair of big wooden doors and had left me there. Something in my gut told me I didnt want to open them, but I had no choice. So I took my small hand and pushed the door open with a sudden 'creak'. So, in my rag-tag shoes; rag-tag as in meaning, just some leather strapped together to make a sach that i could tie up to my feet; i walked into my new room. I half-expected to find my mom there, but instead I found another boy. He was clearly older by atleast 8 years.
"So, your the roomate?" he asked in a groaing voice, sounding dissapointed.
"Yes" I replied. My knees were nearly quivering. "What's your name?" I asked, trying to sound friendly but my tiny voice sounded so stupid next to his low, developing voice. I felt small, and unimportant.
"Randolf Garriao. What's yours kid?" he asked, not seeming to really care. He was a kid of medium build, with black hair tied in a ponytail that hanged down to around his mid-back or right above. He was tan and his muscles were toned. His arms were bigger and stonger than mine. By alot. He was wearing a dark blue robe with an insignia over his right upper chest. It was a raindrop that behind it faintly you could see a snowflake. I didnt know what it meant at the time. So I was curious, but I didnt ask, but just replied to the question he asked me.
"Remis Hatzuma" I said, my voice high-pitched. I was getting embarrased of it now. I was embarrased of just about my entire small self. My chesnut hair had a part in it, and my face was round and baby-like. Not to mention my clothes, they were embarrasing. My shirt was made out of cheap cloth and my shorts were blue but the same material. My green eyes I didnt pay any mind to, for its not like they did anything, right?
"Just wait till Kelne see's you. You better shape up kid, or else your life is going to be pretty hard around here." he said seeming to be a little more interested. Just then, a knock was heard on the door.
A tall boy, around Randolf's age came in. He was wearing a dark red robe that was like Randolf's, just a different color. Also the insignia was different. There was ball that had fire going at a horizontal positive slope angle around it. Like a comet or something my mom had told me about.
"Randolf, who's the runt?" the kid asked. He had red hair that was neatly kept. It was a bowl cut. The kid had brown eyes, with a nice face. But, first impressions are never right. "Oh I dont care, kid, get me my pratice sword, NOW" he said. His voice defined.
That must've been Kelne. I looked around the room frantically, looking for a sword or a stick I used to use with my friends. "I cant find it" I said, my voice quivering. Kelne waled over to me and im not sure what happened next. The next thing I know I was on the hard wooden floor crying.
"I would show you how to respect people, but I have to get to fencing." he said, walking over me getting a narrow sword that had a banboo handle. He stormed went out of the room. I needed to toughen up, this guy was going to kill me if I didnt. I picked myself up of the floor, knowing where I stood in my room. I wished my mom was there, to make everything better. But she wasnt, she just wasnt...

When I slept on my bed that night, I was on the brink of screaming and yelling and crying. It was just so bad. The dinner that night was no more that some broth and bread. I had recieved a blank white robe which I was required to where all day. It had no insignia, yet, I wondered why. I finally fell asleep on the soft matress. Kelne on top of my bed, and Randolf on the bed below me. I was in the middle on a triple bunker. It wasnt too comforting. Randolf was ok, he didnt boss me around I guess. Occasionly he would scold me for not doing something I had no idea I was supposed to do.
When I woke up the next day, I was stiff. I had to shake it off quickly because I kept hearing somone comign through the halls. It was one of the teachers, Professor Kinomie.
"Come on you nit-wits! Today's breakfast is good! We have eggs!" he yelled in his deep voice. I heard him go into some rooms and yell at them for not getting up already. I got out of my bed, and quickly found that Kelne and Randolf were gone. I slipped on my white robe and hurried outside. Only to find Kelne and Randolf standing beside the door.
"We cant go to eat unless all of our roommates are present with us. Thanks alot crybaby, now we will be near the last of the line" Randolf scolded. He groaned, "We actually had eggs for once too.."
Kelne wasnt so erm, gentle. I was cuffed in the ear. I wasnt sprawling on the floor but it still hurt. We started at a brisk pace down the hall, going down multiple sets of stairs. I had to neary run to keep up, my short legs moving like crazy. By the time we got to the bottom floor and the cafeteria, I was about to fall over. Randolf and Kelne went to seperate lines. I noticed Randolf went to a line of blue cloaked students and Kelnew to a line of red cloaked students. I looked around, and saw a line of white-cloaked students like me. They were each around my age, some older, some younger.
I stood behind a blonde girl who was my age I guessed. She had hair that hanged back down to her mid-back. It was strait and it looked well kept. Being 5, I guess i was a tad bit stupid. I reaches out and touched it. Only to get the girl turning around mad and nearly ready to punch me froms the look of it. She had green eyes and a smooth and well-set face. Now that I look back at it, she was pretty cute. "Sorry!" I said apologetically.
She didnt soften up. "'Sorry' doesnt cut it! Daddy!!" she screamed. Talk about bratty, I was about to have my ears break off from the noise. A middle-aged man came running. He was about in his late 20's I guessed. He had wavy blonde hair and blue eyes. He looked at me sternly.
"Aryce, what did this, shogakusha, do to you?" he asked. His voice was intelligent just by the sound. You could tell he was used to use much more precise words. Alot of which I didnt know.
"He pulled my hair!" she said to her father. Her cheeks were red and she crossed her arms and pouted. Her freckles becoming more clear to see.
"No I did-"
"Dont do it again boy" He said before I could even finish. He walked back over to a door and went inside. I didnt see where it went.
"Im sorry Aryce" I said. I didnt need enemies at this school. More than anything I needed friends. Well, she was sorta cute so so I didnt want to get on her bad side. I didnt expect what happened next. Call me crazy, but I swear this was true. She leaned over and kissed me on the cheek when no one was looking. I blushed, and stayed quiet.
"Want to skip me?" she asked me. I got in front of her and stayed quiet, still blushig, still embarrased, still me.
After the breakfast inciddent I went to my classes. They were just reading and writing, and It was easy for me to learn. Routine, thats basicaly what it was. Get up, go to breakfast, classes, lunch, more classes, dinner, bed. This contiuned for 3 years.
Chapter 4: Nothing is More Painful Then Nothing At All
Three years, that is the amount of the time I spent at the Academy of Sorcery. Its the amount of time I spent learning of magic and power. Its the amount of time that I became something I didnt want to become. I became a Necromancer.
I had woken up one Sunday morning. Me and Kelne had come to an agreement. If he didnt boss me around, I would make sure I got extra so we were first in line. So my time in the room wasn't to bad. Randolf had moved out. He was now an upper druid and had been moved to the better dormitories. Kelne was training to be a pyromancer. Me, my test was then. The elemental test. After today i would no longer wear the white robe of the undecided students. I would wear one of the 8 robes of elements. Today I would be changing my daily life in the Academy.
I walked down the halls, my hands in my robe pockets for the last time. I saw Aryce and waved at her. "Hey Aryce, over here!" I called. Me and Aryce were really good friends. For three years we had stuck together helping each other through a lot of tough times. Aryce came walking towards me, her dirty blond hair still at waist length. "Hey Remis, are you ready for the test?" she asked in her usual clam voice.
"Yes" he said. I was faking that. I was scared to death. After the test and you've been assigned an elementist position when your twelve your assigned to a squad. You work with that squad until you either retire or die. Whichever. I choose to retire. I guess I had matured a little bit since I came here. People are a lot more mature here than what regular kids are. This is because we have to follow a much, much, stricter curriculum and don't have much time to play. So we don't have as much energy anymore to do anything beside what were supposed to. With the occasional class game of mage-ball or our own game, just regular old catch.
People had this weird idea me and Aryce were liked each other. Yuk! Well, I'll admit, I have sort of a crush on her. But its not lot like im going to be telling anyone that. Me and Aryce ate breakfast together, always. We never really separated unless we had to go to different classes, which we did. Today they for the white-robes they had fresh bread, eggs, and some toast. The toast was burnt, but this was still better than what we usually got. I guess it was because of the elementist exams. They were driving me crazy. Aryce and Kelne were the only friends I had here. I only saw Kelne when we were getting ready to sleep and if me and Aryce got separated I didnt know what I would do.
After breakfast me and Aryce went to Professor Eamonik's room. Unfortunately, he was the exam proctor. As I entered the room I could see all of the students looking nervous, couldn't blame them, this was a big deal. So, it was time.
“We will be doing this by backwards alphabetical order. Your first name depending when you go. Remis Hatzuma, please come” he said in his usual cold voice. I had gotten used to it, it was anything but new to me. I went up to the proctor and waited for whatever he had planned.
“Remis, please channel some of your mage power into this piece of paper.” he asked me. Well, it was more like a demand, but that doesn't really matter anyways. So, I picked up the paper and channeled what little power I could into it. A black color with a very faint tint of white in it. “Necromancer” he scolded, seeming to be irritated.
When Aryce took her test, and it ended, I asked to leave the room. Much to compliment with the jeers of my peers saying “Aww, too bad, you didnt get stuck with your girlfriend.” called out a few of them. Aryce had became a paladin, which really sucked. Now we were separated an as I walked into the bathroom in my new dark blue robe, I finally let one tear shed down my face. One tear was all it needed for all the pain I've suffered to vanish from me...

It had been four years since I did the elementist test. Now, it was time to be assigned to a team. But before I tell you about that, lemme catch you up on the past few years of my life.
After the test me and Aryce rarely saw eachother. We had totally different classes, different lunch tables. We occasionally would meet in between changes and have a quick chat. Alot of times I wanted to tell her that I felt a little stronger than what she though I did for her. But, im too shy for my own good. Sometims I wonder, should I have told her then? I dont know. I just know that it really burned me back then, that I couldnt bring myself to. Over awhile I eventually learned how to control it, though it egged me here and then.
My classes have been totally different. Instead of training with a variety of elements I have been just training with darkness and ice. I'm quite proficent with the spells, and at the top of my classes. Though it doesn't really matter to me that much. Recently, everyone has been obsessed with the Team choosing. Today was the day.
I walked into a small room in which Professor Habaen had told me to go to. Room 666, not to lucky for me. When I went in there, there was two other people. I saw a boy my age, wearing the classic paladin armor robe. Obviously an A class uniform. I wasnt suprised, I was wearing mine to. Our armors had been given to us recently. Mine was very good for my style of fighting, as I assumed everyone's was. It consisted of a black chest plate, two dark blue shoulder guards, and a variety of leg armor.
The the person was, Aryce. I was excited and walked over to her. "Hey Aryce" I said, quite releived. She didnt even turn her head. She was engrossed in a coversation with the other person. I couldnt help but feel a pulse of jealously rush through me. But I quickly manged to calm it when Aryce turned to me.
"Hey Remis" she said, a smile on her face. Her hair was the same as always, but she looked mor mature in that armor. I pulled up a achair and sat down beside her, not even bothering with the other one. But, she turned back to the other boy and started talking again.
"So, Jaque, you said your father had horses with armor made of silver?" she asked the other one. My clenched fist were about to make my hands bleed.
"Yes Aryce, my family is quite rich." he said to her. This guy was a rich boy. His neat blond hair was in a ponytail. Whh the band was made of leather. His armor was like other paladin armor's, but his was much more polished and well-kept. I hated him. His arrogance could be heard in his voice. "So, who is this? A necromancer, an aquaintance of yours?" he asked giving me a snobby look.
"We are actually good friends Jaque" I replied in a rather confident tone. This guy wouldnt bring me down, no way.
Aryce could sense the tension between the 2 of us. "Now now boys, dont geta quarrel yet." he said in a teasing grin. Her freckles showing and her green eyes having a slight sparkle to them.
A knock was heard, and then a man came in. He was a good 6'4'' and was dressed in wind armor. Stream-lined and fit perfectly. He had brown hair and brown eyes. a five'o'clock shadow beard. "Ok, get over it you 2. Your on a team now, you have to learn to work together" he scolded us.
I had to be on a team with this guy? I already didnt like the idea. He was too snobby and he was arrogant. I wouldnt be able to stand this guy at all.
"Twilight Brigade, my name is Sir Kaien, you will be working under my demand. You are no longer students of the academy, you are now warriors. Aryce Rosean, Remis Hatzuma, Jaque Silian, you are now soilders of the royal militray of King Silian the third. Attention!" he barked. His voice was fair, as any hard-working mans. But you could sense the command in it.
I made a connection, Jaque Silian, King Silian? Oh my god, this guy was the prince. I honestly didnt like him personally, but sense he was high ranking then some teachers here, I had to show him respect. I stood up quickly, my arms behind me and thumbs croosed with hands clasped. My feet shoulder-width apart. And my eyes straight ahead. I was no longer Remis Hatzuma, student of the Academy of Sorcery, but now, Remis Hatzuma, member of the Twilight Brigade, soilder in the royal military. I should've run when my mom dropped me off here. I really should have.
Chapter 6 The Light Within The Shadows
Sir Kaien led the Twilight Brigade out of the room and into the training grounds. I could help but feel a tad bit like a puppet to him. Following commands and doing whatever he told me. But, he wasnt as bad as Jaque. He strutted ahead of me and Aryce like he was bette than us. What he didnt know is, he had probably been pampered through his life and he only though he could be a soilder. Yeah, right.....
"Twilight Brigade, welcome to training. This is very simple, you pratice your moves and deveop your overall teamowork, got it?" he asked in a retorical tone. Everyone, including me, nodded to him. "I will only be your supervisor, it will be completely up to you what you do during practice, I will only make sure you dont die." he said. He jumped into a tree with inhuman power. I was gueesing since he had wind on his side he was a little faster and powerful than most. Who knows?
Before I knew it I found Jaque trying to punch me in the gut. An easy dodge, using my forearm I blocked it then using my hand I grabbed his foreharm. Throwing him sideways. I was in a pivot position. My left foot forward on it's toes, and my back foot on it's heel. I was overall crouching. One of my arms spread forward and my other arm behind me ready for any oncoming attacks. He got back up, a dagger in his hand.
"Cross-Slash" he murmured as the blade started to to glow. He ran at me and swung the blade at my upper neck. On instinct, I jumped backwards and then realized something. Aryce, she must be doign something. Then I felt of gust of air behind me, on my neck. I saw Jaque on the ground in front of me, then.....I swiftly turned to the left in mid-air and then landed just half-second later. I saw Aryce had a punch sticking where I had moved from. She landed down a few feet away.
Suddenly, I felt a pain digging into my side. It was Jaque, delivering a fist into me. I grabbed his wrist, and pulled it away just as I felt another hand near me. I moved to the left but it was gripping my shoulder tight.
"That's enough for now, Remis." Sir Kaien said from behind me. It was his hand on my shoulder. "Time to announce he team ranks. The leader, Jaque, next in line, Remis, and last is Aryce. On assignments, should anything happen, You follow Jaque, if he is impaired, you follow Remis, and then on to Aryce. This the order. No questions." He said, walking away from us. "Well, c'mon, back to the room." he murmured.
I was pissed, this guy had gotten his rank because of his name. I knew that I was the strongest, but now this guy would let it go to his head. I was really getting mad at this. As we arrived back the room, I walked out as soon as we were dismissed. There were two reasons for this. One, I was mad about the training, and two. This reason is more personal. But I think I saw Aryce, flirting with him?! Sometimes people just get mad, so I guess this was one of these times. But, my heart felt a little weak at the moment, like I was sick. Talk about some crap right?
When I go back to my domitory, finding Kelne sitting on his bottom bunk, yet, a case was next to him. "Kelne, whats going on?" I asked seeing the suitcase that seemed to be full of clothes.
"Sorry squirt, but, Ive been sent out. The war between us and Thelea has progressed, so, I'm being deported tommorow at Port Demoles. See you in a few years." he said, a grim look for once on his red face.
That was it, my only friend I had left, was leaving?! The next day I woke up, only to find an empty bunk under me. Yet, there was a letter. When I reached down and opened it, I couldn't beleive what I saw....
My name is Remis Hatzuma, and I am here to tell you my past, and why I was chosen to be a Twilight Guardian....
