Chapter Nine: The First Guardian
Maelin woke up to a dank dark day. It was not uncommon for Valenwood to be dark all the time. The trees and their branches blocked out even the most determined rays.
Reena was still asleep. He wondered if he should explain to her what happened last night. He fingered a shurikan until Reena stirred. She knuckled her eyes and yawned.
"Reena?" He asked.
"Hmmm?" She said, not entirely awake.
"We are going to need to go on a side trip. "
"Okay." she said.
"It might be dangerous." He said
"I was hoping you would say that. " She said. Her blue eyes twinkled.
They suited up. Maelin put on his customized leather armor and hung his sword from his belt. A number of shurikans were tucked in his pockets, as well as scrolls and a potion or two.Reena put her ebony mail on, strapped her longsword to her hip and attached her shield to her right arm. She carried her pack which also contained various items.
After they were packed up, Maelin said "North"
Reena nodded and ran into underbrush with Maelin running after her.
After maybe an hour of running, They ran into a treeless plain. Maelin's eyes teared as they adjusted to the sudden brightness. In the Center of the plain sat a tower. The Tower was huge, around eighty floors. The elves' eyes widened and their mouths fell open.
Reena spoke first. "I have read about this place, it's a shrine. It serves as a pilgramage in one building. The pilgrims make their way to the top to show the Gods their determination. They are tested in a variety of ways.
"What kind of Gods?" Maelin asked
"Daedra. Daedric Princes."
That explains it. Maelin thought. Mephala means to speak to me.
"Shall we?" Maelin asked.
"Let's."
They ran towards the temple. Their armor glinted in the sunlight. When they reached the enormous stone steps. They stopped dead when they got to the closed doorway. On the walls was writing. The Writing was dull and fading away.
Test One:The Test of Endurance.
Maelin put one hand on the wall. They doors, which were three times Maelin's size, swung open with an ominous squeak that echoed in the building. Maelin and Reena walked in, their hands on their weapons. They were in a large room that was lit from a number of candles on the walls. Their eyes widened, in the center of the room was a tortoise.A tortoise that was so large the room shook when it walked. A tortoise who was looking at them with glaring red eyes. It opened its large maw, which three men could have crawled through shoulder to shoulder and blasted a stream of inferno.
